Life 2.0

Life is too short not to be fun….

March 24th, 2008

Team Fish had a long lunch with a number of our friends last weekend over a 5 hour period at the San Francisco YC. It was a great time and I gleamed three main themes from the event that I believe deserve to be chronicled.

Numero Uno: Our current life is a finite situation. Even though it can be tough to get together with your friends sometimes, the effort has always proven to be worth it. (thanks jeff)

Dos: The day of the enterprise software sales person is over. The idea of closing the multi-million dollar perpetual software transactions by flying around the world, doing major wining & dining and closing the deal in the Red Carpet Club has gone the way of the Wolly Mamoth. The adoption of the SaaS model, Sarbox, and new corporate procurement procedures have changed forever the way business applications are, and will be, acquired. The fat cat 1k sales guy is only relevant in software companies with revenues north of one billion. Small companies thinking that they can justify a business plan by adding enough of the $1.5 million dollar quota carrying relics are doing nothing but a disservice to their investors.

Tres: If people keep on doing the same things based on similar misguided premises, the same suboptimal results will be realized. See Einstein. It’s time to take a clean look at the world and have fun with each day and find folks you enjoy being with. If you aren’t passionate about the people and things you are spending the balance of your day with, it’s time to do something else.

My dad was a lot smarter than I ever gave him credit for. I believe he would smile at this post.

Things you can learn from a 1 year old

February 24th, 2008

It’s interesting what you can learn from a 1 year old.

1. Bathrooms aren’t totally necessary.

2. Applesauce works as hair gel.

3. Random keystrokes aren’t really random for a 1 year old. Russian can be invoked as the main language of an unprotected (open) laptop in the living room. You are lucky if you have keys on the keyboard when you get back.

4. Streaking didn’t go out in the 70’s.

5. If you don’t like what the chef brings to you, it’s all right to be visible in your response and request a replacement.

6. You don’t need to let the “man” keep you down. All’s fair if you are bigger than your three year old sister.
